Ever since I started investigating the frequency of illness in those with introverted preferences, I've been on a mission to find new ways to relax.
From the emails and comments I received on that blog, it seems most introverts prefer doing something (anything) alone. This is not new news, but what I want to know is what SPECIFICALLY do you do to re-energize. Yoga? Read? Sky-dive? Blog? Shop? Play Guitar Hero? Exercise?
I came across a CD full of statistics about personality types from Peter and Katharine Myers in 2001. Here are just a few stats this CD PowerPoint presentation addresses:
Here are just a few things I learned from this presentation:
ISFPs and INFPs have the highest level of mean stress, and they typically stress about finances the most.
The types most likely to say that they are Republicans are the ESTJs, ISTJs, INTJs and ENTJs.
The proportion of extroverts to introverts is approximately equal.
In general, the SFs tend to like an organization that emphasizes employee loyalty and a job for life.
With regard to the topic of this blog, there are clear distinctions between leisure activities of introverts and extroverts. Extroverts reported that they enjoyed activities that typically require multiple people, playing sports, playing cards, music, anything outdoors, etc. Whereas introverts choose more quiet (inside) activities like reading, art, watching tv, writing, and my personal favorite- sleeping!
I didn't know sleeping qualifies as a leisure activity, but now I'm happy to report that as my favorite hobby!
I'm curious if any introverts out there have tried any "new age/alternative" ways of coping with exhaustion like yoga, pilates, tai chi, or acupuncture.

While you wait, you can leave questions about the leisure habits of all the personality types in the comments, and I'll do my best to get back to you!

Another INTJ reporting! This time of year, the two-hour/day bike commute is the perfect de-stressor for me. But I also love to curl up with a good book, cook, or just putter around the house. And usually a couple weekends a month, my husband and I split up and do our own things on Saturdays, to nurture both of our introverted natures.
I'm a 6-7 hour sleeper, myself. Too much good stuff to get up and do in the morning!

To piggy back on your post, Id like to say that the definition of an introvert is someone who "recharges" by doing something solo. An extrovert "recharges" by doing something with other people.
Now, in addition to introverts as the author of the blog has focused on, can extroverts explain their best ways of de-stressing/recharging? I personally go to the dive around the corner and play some pool. This extrovert would like to hear from other extroverts as well!

I wonder which MBTI is most likely to be a blogger...

@ AJ- you are right on with the definition. So, it is no surprise that introverts relax alone and extroverts recharge with people- since that is the very definition of introversion/extroversion. After I wrote that post yesterday I began to wonder if there's a difference in the number of hours I's vs E's need for sleep. So, how many hours of sleep do you need? As an ISTJ, I need 8-10.
@Anna- fantastic question. I assume it would be fairly similar to writers in general. Let's take an informal unscientific poll here. Bloggers- what are your MBTI preferences?

I should add that the personality type that chooses "writer or author" as a profession is ENFP.

Good post. I'm an INTJ, and I'm fascinated by personality types. The best way for me to truly de-stress is to do some type of physical activity on my own. I usually prefer jogging, but I just started biking too. They both work.

I'm an INTJ as well, and I tend to unwind two ways:
-Shopping alone (I like being around people but not dealing with them)
-Working out at the gym (also around people, but in my own world thanks to the old iPod).
I function best on 5-6 hours of sleep because then I can get things done early in the morning... and late at night.

I'm also an INTJ, and my relaxing usually does take the form of a solo activity. Sometimes I don't necessarily need to be alone, for instance, reading a book while in the same room as my fiance isn't any different than being in a different room, but, the activity itself tends to be solo.
As for what, for me it's frequently reading, though the gym and video games also hit the list.
On the sleep scale, I'm a 6-8 hour person myself.

I'm an INTP. I mostly relax alone, either watching TV by myself, browsing the web, or tinkering with my computer. I do tai chi in a group setting, but it is still an introverted activity.
My other major hobby, though, is somewhat extroverted. I take group ballroom lessons, practice regularly with a partner, and go social dancing or to other kinds of dance parties (the normal, non-ballroom kind) for fun. I like individual practice better than social dancing, which is the introvert in me speaking. I also like being in front of an appreciative audience as long as I don't have to interact directly with them.

4 INTJ's...now that's interesting!

I guess INTJs are more likely to be blog surfers! ENTP here - 6 hours will do, when I go crazy, Ill sleep 8 (weekends) - Ill also drink expired milk now and then or get a half-decaf as opposed to my regular decaf. :)

Yoga is a good way for introverts to relax, but the funny thing is that I learned it in a class full of people. Biking in the country is more solitary but still active if you're looking for something physical. Not every introvert leisure activity need be stationary.

I'm an INTP, and I read, write, run, sing, or do art to relax.
I also like yoga and pilates or even just walking for exercise.
But I don't sleep much. Right now I have a lot of time to sleep and I get about 6 or 7 hours. When I'm in school and working I do 4-6 hours and it seems to work okay still.

What is it about blogging/reading blogs that draw in so many INT's (both INTJs and INTPs)?
I'm now fascinated by our little informal poll!!!
Don’t judge based on popularity or blind reciprocity, instead make sure they “get it” and just as importantly, that their followers “get it”. More...
