Would you really want to put a man in charge of the country who fights against women’s reproductive rights and calls them derogatory names? I certainly wouldn’t. And why aren’t more people aware of this misogyny?

Because of the conservative media??! Apparently evryone only watches FoxNews nowadays, that is the only news source I know that has a biased of conservatism, all of the rest ABC, NBC, MSNBC, CBS, CNN (and all their stations) are liberal media…funny I didn’t hear it on them either. This is a very loose argument you are throwing out here. Then again I am also sure that you find it acceptable for people to be wearing “shoot Cheney not Iraqis” T-shirts out there right?
Chris- those other stations really aren’t all that liberal. If you remember, all of the major networks were very supportive of the Iraq war in the beginning. Any conservation that criticized the war was quickly stamped out in the patriotic fever that took over the mainstream media. Even Donahue got fired for being critical of the war when he had the top rated show on his network!
Because conservatives wanted a news station that only gave them their side of the story, they created Fox News. That doesn’t make the rest of the media more liberal, it just skews the equation to make it seem so.
I’m not saying there’s a vast conservative media conspiracy, but I certainly don’t believe in the liberal media hocus pocus story.
@Chris- the media is far more conservative than liberal, particularly on television.
@Tim- I don’t believe in a vast media conspiracy, but I do feel that more stations are skewing conservative because of the current political climate.
Tim-just because all the stations were supportive at the beginning does not mean that they aren’t slanted in that way…the whole american public was in support too back then and it was the popular story to follow. just my two cents
I don’t get it, did McCain actually say this? It may be true, but I’ll wait for some evidence. ‘Because Cliff Schecter said so.’ Doesn’t really cut it.
“the media is far more conservative than liberal, particularly on television.”
As far as the media being biased, surely it depends on your point of reference. The media are biased to the far left of me, probably to the far right of you. What you call center, I call left and vice versa.
Finally, the word ‘media’ is the plural of medium. Media are. Media have.
@Testudo- yes, he did say this. This is cross posted from my blog, and the original attribution to a post a Feministe was cut off, you can read it here: http://www.feministe.us/blog/archives/2008/06/17/yes-we-cunt/
And in terms of grammar, I see media as an acting entity or group, making it singular. But thanks for the tip.
I posted this story a while back, as well. It happened like 15 years ago, but it’s making the rounds now.
Kate,
Thanks for the link. I really have no dog in this fight either way, but I’m still not entirely convinced. It ultimately links to a RAWSTORY(?) web article that talks about a book wherein it is claimed that McCain said this. I haven’t read the book so I really don’t know what the original source is, however an author claiming it just isn’t enough.
Anyway, there’s certainly enough to criticize regarding McCain, campaign finance reform is the first thing that comes to my mind. Whether or not he said a nasty word 15 years ago is just the sort of controversy that people bemoan when eulogizing the demise of substantial policy debates.
Frank Lloyd Wright was an @ss by any measure, but I don’t think any serious architecture critique would hinge on his personal demeanor. I just don’t care all that much about personality when it comes to electing a president.
Ah well. I’m sure I’m in the minority on that one.
Finally, even if one were to consider ‘media’ to be acting as one, I think it should still be plural. The men were acting as one. The bricks were made into a wall. Etc…I’m thinking that if you want to have the singular verb, you’d have to use media as some kind of modifier, which might be weird. Like the media conglomerate or the media complex. Ew!
It’s not covered because the media likes their “maverick” mccain angle. . . and they’re like a dog with a steak bone; they’re not giving it up without a fight.
