Whatever you have heard about being a lawyer is all wrong. Law and Order is not reality. Boston Legal is not reality. That show about lawyers with the George Michael’s song is not reality. And if a lawyer shows you their “typical day,” more likely than not, they are glamorizing the experience.
Not once have I engaged in a chat session with any of my friends. Not once. No one has chatted with me, either. I have yet to receive a real-time notification, though I suppose on the day that I do happen to be online when someone pokes me… well, that will be nifty, I guess.
Because my generation is already fighting the information overload epidemic. We’re so addicted to our connections they can actually become a hazard to our health and to the wellbeing of others. But we’re also in the midst of trying to define our lives. To figure out who and what to build our lives around. Starting families, careers, marriages. Looking for meaning, change, value.
If you have an unmistakable trait that everyone recognizes in the office, you need to be aware of how favors and paying it forward can be a benefit as well as a deterrent to you. I’ve personally experienced both the positive and negative aspects of it.
To become a leading associate you’ll have to change your formula for success in every new position and stage in life. There are no universal rules for success so don’t start creating one in your mind. Know that with every new project, every new relationship, every new conversation you need to adapt and adjust to be successful.
We all get the jitters when it comes to interviewing. Who hasn’t woken up the day of an interviewed and wondered “what if I just didn’t go in.” It sounds simple enough. You lose the anxiety and get to move on with your life without facing the confrontation of calling in.
One easy way to do this…go somewhere where you can’t spend it. Spend a weekend at a farm, or camping. Go somewhere where all shopping is far way, inconvenient and the Internet is not available. Live out in the country, not the suburbs, way out there.
It’s a fair concern and relates to what seems like a massive challenge in the non-profit world: how to recruit the best and brightest young people into a sector that generally pays less and (exceptions notwithstanding) is filled with lower caliber people than in the private sector.

The premise of the book is to show how powerful one-liner marketing campaigns have the potential to put a company on the map, change the way we see the world, or even put somebody into the White House. I’d like to take this opportunity to look at 2008’s slogans and explore their impact and effectiveness.
