Ah the job hunt, such a mystical realm of uncertainty and fear. You take the classes, score the internships, design a killer resume, post it online and buy that ever so precious suit. So tell me why, in my very first official interview as a (soon to be) college grad I wore jeans and a sweatshirt? Welcome friends to the wonderful world of the phone interview.
I tend to think that whatever direction your personality goes, it's even more so on the phone. So if you're hyperactive and a fast talker, you need to take extra steps to slow down and mellow out on the phone. Myself, I'm laid back and can come across on the phone as bored or unmotivated, so I make a point of walking around the room while I do a phone interview.
I haven't had much success with phone interviews. Thanks for the tips.
Some good tips! Some would suggest to dress up anyway, to put you in the right mindset. Penelope suggests standing up during the interview, because you'll sound more dynamic.
My #1 phone advice tip:
Make sure you turn off any distractions, especially call waiting! Nothing like a beep in the ear to throw you off your mark.
It's a good idea to practice some phone interviews. Ask friends or family members (or career coaches!) to help you prepare.
Phone interviews can be tough because it's hard for your personality to show. You can't rely on your charm - it's all about what you say. Prepare to help ensure that you say the right things!
Good luck, Marilyn!

A real danger in the telephone interview is talking too much. Since you can't see the eye rolls and impatient posture of the interviewer, you don't have the clues you need to stop talking.
Keep a trigger near by; a gold pen or a special coffee cup. Every time you look at it, remember to shorten your responses to no more than three sentences and do ask a question to mark the end of your comment.
