I have a confession: last summer I fell in love with a city.

Location is important for both your social life and professional life, therefore where you live has a direct impact on your happiness and success. For Gen-Y'ers, you really want to live in a city, where the action is. There are also the most jobs in a city.

Monica, love the post. I completely agree with your 4 points. I would like to add a 5th.

Here is an entrepreneur thought-leader podcasts:http://www.stanford.edu/group/edcorner/uploads/podcast/conwayMaples080123.mp3. The podcast interviews two Angel investors who literally say, "If you're not in Northern California, don't start a business." Now, I don't completely agree with them, but I have been to NorCal and have felt the difference (I'm in SoCal). Information moves faster, there are more investors and entrepreneurs, and everyone seems to want to help each other more. If you want to start an internet-based company, then I must side with them and advise you to move to Silicon Valley. That's my two cents :)

Not all Gen Y wants to live in cities, though there does seem to be a shift of people of all ages moving from suburbs to cities. Maybe it's because I'm from the midwest but a lot of my friends from college still love living in the small towns they grew up in.

Sorry about the link - it's to a piece written by thrive - you can also read it here on his blog: http://variableinterest.wordpress.com/2008/03/11/scoring-with-urban-biod...

Interesting tidbit about internet companies in Northern California. At least the weather there is bound to be better than it is here in Chicago!

Monica -

I am prejudiced but you chose the best city in the country! Chicago has anything and everything you could want, no matter what your age. Growing up here was fantastic and living nearby keeps me in touch with everything important to me.

I'm glad you now call it home.

This is the time of year when, every time the phone rings here at Veritas Prep HQ, there's a good chance it's an applicant calling to ask us if he should apply to business school in the third admissions round, or if he should wait until next year. The answer, as is the answer for most things in life, is "It depends."

Personal Branding

There has been a great deal written about how to engage with social media to establish a name for yourself online, but a commonly overlooked piece of the puzzle is also one of the simplest: owning your own domain name. A domain name complements the rest of your online presence through branding using yourname.com or a similar variation.
