Another idea: search with localized social media like Meetup or blogs that are written by locals. Sometimes all you have to do to start making a local connection is pay attention.

Great idea, Bruno. There certainly are plenty of blogs out there centered on the social life of a specific city. I've used them to find out about attractions and hang out spots that are a little more off the beaten path.
