Above black and white, it’s articulate, it’s real, it’s honest. Beautifully done: The fact is that the comments that have been made and the issues that have surfaced over the last few weeks reflect the complexities of race in this country that we’ve never really worked through – a part of our union that we have […]

Obama’s speech was a kick in the teeth for many people.
Wright’s comments did not just pop up out of nowhere recently to discredit him, Hannity and other conservative radio hosts have been talking about it since last April!
For Obama to say that we have surely sat in church and not agreed with what our pastors say is absolute nonsense! I don’t go to church to listen to politics of the preacher, I go to be closer to God. To top that off, I have NOT disagreed with my pastor, not because they haven’t talked about politics but because I would not go to a church that didn’t hold my same values and morals! For Obama to be able to sit in that church for 20 YEARS says a lot about his character. Not to mention his wife has said that she just recently has been proud of her country and in the past made mention that african american people could not do well in this country. Then again Obama made it this far and they both attended great schools!
To go back and talk about the Constitution and the founding fathers in such a demeaning way also tells a lot about Obama’s patriotism and knowledge of history.
I was very proud that the only one bringing up race in this campaign was Hillary and I applauded Obama for riding that out but now he using this situation as a victim card in the campaign.
One of the reasons why race continues to be an issue is because racism is a time capsule that people won’t let buried! To say that our country has not come a long way since the 50s is ludacris, we may not all be perfect but let’s be honest there will always be racism on all sides, the fact that Obama’s church was a blacks only church proves the racism on that side! Not to mention Wright calling white people “the skunk of the earth” and Judaism “a gutter religion”
I find it funny that if Obama were to attend a “blacks only” church and if Hillary would attend a “women only” church and McCain were to attend a “whites only” church, it would be McCain’s head rolling and no one else’!
To compare Obama/Wright to McCain/Hagee is also nonsense. Hagee is not McCain’s pastor AND McCain IMMEDIATELY said that he did not agree with Hagee at the conference. There is nothing alike in these two cases!
I also find it funny that when these issues come up people get upset that their party is being treated unfairly by the republican side. If these candidates cannot answer tough questions and cannot answer for their past and morals, they have no right to be the president! Of all candidates McCain has been cut down by conservatives harshly also because they do not see him as a true conservative.
To say that Obama should not answer for his religion is hypocrisy on the liberals part, I do remember people calling for an explanation of Mormon faith while Romney was still in!
I think a thorough understanding of this issue takes a special breed of empathy, one which I dare say you’re lacking here.
Obama’s pastor comes from a time when his race wasn’t allowed to use the same bathroom stalls as ours (I’m assuming you’re not black). Try your damndest to put yourself in the shoes of a man who has watched that kind of overt discrimination of his people, and then tell me you wouldn’t harbor even the tinniest bit of resentment toward the country which allowed it to happen. Sorry, dude, but that’s the prism through which most blacks who lived during that era view their reality in this country. If you can’t accept that and try to empathize with it, good luck understanding our country’s history.
And I’m not a Democrat. I was for Huckabee for he got out.
Peace!
I think you misunderstood the point I was trying to get across here.
I think that there was a time and place for this type of reaction both on the account of Obama and that of his pastor, that time and place was back in the 60s, i’ll give you some extra time, how about up to the 80s.
I am sorry but my generation has nothing to do with the racist biased of the generations that have come before me and even my parents were an accepting generation. I am a 25 year old conservative by the way. I actually agree with affirmative action, but I think it should be abolished now, african americans have every opportunity as most whites. Those that choose not to try and make a difference in their own lives and rely on the government to get them somewhere DO fail. The few people left that judge a person by their skin color are far outnumbered by those of us that support unity.
It’s easy to point the finger at white people saying that we are the ones that are racist and keep people divided. Yet Sharpton, Jackson and others are out there still preaching of slavery under the white man to generations of blacks that have never been owned. As long as Sharpton and Jackson and others like them are alive, the racism that they induce will only fuel the flames in our society.
Have I ever been discriminated against? No not really. My grandmother though whom is full italian was spit on as a child growing up by those that came here before us, so I know about discrimination, I am not that far separated.
Let’s take race completely out of the equation and talk about how Wright blamed the US for 9/11 and presented a hateful speech the Sunday following that tragedy. Once again, for someone to sit in a church where a pastor says such hateful things and talks about presidents screwing their interns (while making grinding motions) says a lot about those that attend that church!
I’m over it.
Bottom line: Rev Wright is Rev Wright, not Barack Obama, and he shouldn’t have to explain every unsavory thing the man’s ever said.
Vote your way I’ll vote mine, we’re not changing minds here.
