In college, I was shocked and dismayed by the range of writing abilities in my classes. Some students could crank out a well structured essay in their sleep; others struggled with basic grammar.
1 RESPONSES TO "DISTINGUISH YOURSELF AT WORK: WRITE!"
Cary Hillebrand
Tad hello,
Very pertinent column. I have worked in engineering for more years than I care to admit. At this stage, I have focused more on business development and client support. When asked what was for me the most important and relevant college course, if you guessed physics, applied analysis, elctrical circuit design or any of the rest of the technical material, the content of which I began to forget not long after exiting the final exam room, you would be wrong. It was English Composition 101.
Professor Higgins is fortunate that he never existed, because if he had, the mangling of English that I see in everything from informal e-mail correspondence to design reports would have had him rolling over in his grave.
