Nobody blogs in a void. Blogging is a community activity, and how you treat your readers and fellow bloggers can affect your success. Be good to your readers, and you'll build a loyal audience. Be good to your fellow bloggers, and they're sure to help you out with links and positive mentions. This is great advice for those just starting out, but it can benefit anyone, no matter the size of their blog.

"Be liberal with the link love"
I would think you could have too many links in your post. The result would cheapen the links which are most important to your message. Maybe color coding links would be an option if there was a legend that indicated red was most important, etc.

That's a good point, Mark. I've seen some posts that are link-overloaded--and they're really a pain to read and just come off as too promotional and distracted. I link to other posts when it's appropriate--like when you're talking about an idea you found on someone else's blog first--and being willing to add new blogs to your blogroll, especially if the bloggers are just starting out and could use the help. But you're right, there's a difference between being generous and being too generous.

Jennifer, here's a way you could take the goodwill a step further (and kill two birds with your metaphorical stone)... use questions from other bloggers or writers as the inspiration for a post. That way you're helping others AND creating useful content for your blog.

And by the way, I think you're pretty on-the-ball about responding to comments.

Terrific points. I especially agree with the referrals - there's nothing like being able to tell a client or prospect that their needs can be taken care of, either with me or with one of my growing network of designers, bloggers, strategists, and more. Thanks!

This is the time of year when, every time the phone rings here at Veritas Prep HQ, there's a good chance it's an applicant calling to ask us if he should apply to business school in the third admissions round, or if he should wait until next year. The answer, as is the answer for most things in life, is "It depends."

Personal Branding

When I embarked on my blog journey last December, I thought of it as just an extension of who I was, professionally and personally. I also looked at the blog as a way of being creative. It’s become more than that to me and those of you that read this. My blog is now part of my personal brand.
