Over the past few months, I’ve become a gamer. I didn’t seek out gaming, but it has infiltrated my life so subtly that I’m convinced it is going to be one of the hottest trends in companies, homes, and even on my daily commute over the upcoming years, thanks to companies like Nintendo who are targeting the mainstream, casual gamer and providing incentives for smart people to adopt the technology.

I am an avid gamer, I always have been! I love the stress relief it gives me. It really takes my mind of work and helps me "reset" when I need it.

Gaming is great in moderation!

P.S I love my DS for travel!

Ugh. I'm also an avid gamer--at home!--but I'm not sure I see that big a difference between a company-sponsored Wii haven and the rock-climbing walls and foosball tables you'd find in one conference room of every "savvy" technical startup during the 1990s.

And I suspect you'll eventually face the same problems anew: some folks with addictive personalities will take too much advantage of these recreation activities, and co-workers--young and old--will bristle. Then come the rules, and then come the politics.

Justin, I feel the same way. Gaming in moderation really helps me de-stress.

Sean, I understand your concern. Like I mentioned, this won't work at most companies, at least in their present form, because most companies don't have the right corporate culture.

Luckily, I work at a company where a game room works. And it's awesome, because I get to play video games 2-3 times a week, for 15 minutes or so each time, with my coworkers. We don't have an abuse problem because we all work extra hours anyway to meet deadlines - the longer you play the longer you stay to get your work done.

Thanks for the comments!

This is the time of year when, every time the phone rings here at Veritas Prep HQ, there's a good chance it's an applicant calling to ask us if he should apply to business school in the third admissions round, or if he should wait until next year. The answer, as is the answer for most things in life, is "It depends."

Personal Branding

When I embarked on my blog journey last December, I thought of it as just an extension of who I was, professionally and personally. I also looked at the blog as a way of being creative. It’s become more than that to me and those of you that read this. My blog is now part of my personal brand.
